Sharing by EMTA Awardees

The Association of Mathematics Educators (AME) is proud to organize a series of three sharing sessions on best practices by past Excellence in Mathematics Teaching Award (EMTA) awardees. Each session will last for an hour via the zoom platform, please register your attendance in the links provided.

Sharing 1: Math Minds Matter: Nurturing Growth Through Feedback
Speaker: Ng Li Mei, St Margaret’s Schools (Secondary)
Monday 19th February, 3:00 to 4:00 pm.
Abstract: In the dynamic landscape of education, the role of feedback is paramount. “Math Minds Mater: Nurturing Growth Through Feedback” explores approaches that contribute to a positive learning environment and encourage a growth mindset among students. The session delves into feedback strategies aimed at the development of strong mathematical skills through timely and constructive input. Join us for a comprehensive exploration, gaining practical insights into how intentional feedback can shape positive learning experiences and foster individual student growth in mathematics education.

Sharing 2: Teaching division of fractions with the application of the Singapore Teaching Practice
Speaker: Tan Lee Tuan, Kheng Cheng School
Postponed to Tuesday 5th March, 3:00 to 4:00 pm.
Abstract: The learning of fractions can pose a significant challenge for students as it requires an understanding of basic mathematical operations and the ability to visualize and manipulate numerical quantities. In our local context, the introduction of fractions begins in Primary 2. As students progress to upper primary, the transition from perceiving fraction as equal parts of a whole to recognizing them as integral components of the broader concept of proportionality becomes a more intricate and abstract journey. Challenges arise as students strive to develop a conceptual understanding of how quantities relate to one another and apply this concept to various situations. This sharing will outline our approach in the application of the Singapore Teaching Practice to guide the teaching and learning of the complex topic of division of fractions. Specifically, the sharing will provide insights on how teaching actions are used and adapted to cater to the diverse learning needs of the students.

Sharing 3: Beyond the Numbers: Empowering Learning Through Real-World Mathematics
Speaker: Chua Wang Zhi, Jurong West Secondary School
Wednesday 28th February, 3:00 to 4:00 pm.
Abstract: Incorporating problems in real-world contexts not only provides students with the opportunity to recognise the practical utility of mathematics but also fosters a better appreciation for the subject. This presentation aims to share practical methods for incorporating real-world contexts into our day-to-day teaching. Additionally, participants will be taken through a lesson package that guides students in approaching a typical real-world context question in the O-Level paper. Join this sharing to learn and engage in a discussion on enhancing mathematics education through practical applications and effective teaching strategies.
