Dr. Yeap Ban Har

Biography. Ban Har taught at National Institute of Education Singapore for a decade until 2010. Prior to that, he was a teacher including a brief stint with the Gifted Education Programme and a head of department. Currently, Ban Har is Director of Curriculum and Teacher Development at Pathlight School in Singapore. He holds a similar position at Anglo Singapore International School in Thailand. He also travels the world to run professional development courses for teachers and school leaders in more than 40 countries. Ban Har is a textbook author. His research focus includes challenging high-achieving students, mathematical problem solving and teacher professional learning including lesson study. He is on the International committee of International Group for Mathematical Creativity and Giftedness as well as a Council member at World Association of Lesson Studies. Ban Har holds a Master of Education, MA in Southeast Asian Studies and Ph.D. in mathematics education.


Abstract. In this workshop, Ban Har will use a few examples from primary and lower secondary levels to discuss principles in challenging high-achieving students. We will look at abilities that students who are able to handle mathematical challenge possess and how all students can develop these abilities. The session is interactive. Do come with your questions!

Session 1: Conducting Real-Life Statistical Investigations: A Practical Approach for Educators

Assistant Professor Zhu Tianming

Biography. Zhu Tianming is an Assistant Professor at the Mathematics & Mathematics Education Department of the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University. Dr Zhu received her PhD in statistics from the National University of Singapore. Her main research interests include hypothesis testing problem for high-dimensional data and multivariate functional data, and supervised classification problem for functional data. She also has interests in synthesizing tabular data using Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) and Variational Autoencoder (VAE), anomaly detection using Autoencoder and brain MRI classification problem.


Abstract. The first session, led by Tianming, will be on how to conduct a statistical investigation in real-life scenarios. She will demonstrate the process by sharing an example that illustrates how to guide students through each step of a simple statistical investigation.


Session 2: Hands-on session with the Singapore Department of Statistics’s (DOS) Digital Services and Tools (SingStat Website, SingStat Table Builder and SingStat Mobile App)

The 2nd session will be conducted by the Singapore Department of Statistics (DOS) to introduce and demonstrate the use of DOS’s digital services i.e., the SingStat Website, SingStat Table Builder and SingStat Mobile App. These services offer statistical resources relevant to educators and students. Participants will be guided step-by-step to familiarise themselves with the digital services.


Introduction. As Singapore’s National Statistical Authority, the Singapore Department of Statistics (DOS), is responsible for collecting, compiling, and disseminating a wide range of economic and socio-demographic data to support Singapore’s economic and social development. DOS has developed various digital services and tools to facilitate data understanding and exploration.


The SingStat Website disseminates a comprehensive range of up-to-date data and resources such as infographics and interactive dashboards across various domain areas.

The SingStat Table Builder facilitates access to over 2,300 data tables from over 70 public sector agencies, providing a comprehensive view of the Singapore’s economic and socio-demographic domains.

The SingStat Mobile App provides convenient access to Singapore’s key official statistics and ASEAN statistics, allowing users to view key indicators of Singapore at a glance, get a quick preview of the data trends, share charts and data, and receive push alerts on the latest data releases.
